Good Morning to you all and welcome new mailing list members!
It's been a great summer up north in Canada with lots to do including preparing the rest of my 2016 tour schedule as well as beginning to book 2017....hard to believe.
This week I venture to Boston for my performance at the David A. Grossman Fall Fundraiser at Harvard. After sharing mine and Frye Gaillard's song, "Where We Are" with Stacy Grossman, beloved wife of the late David A Grossman, I was invited to sing "Where We Are" with those in attendance at this year's Fall Fundraiser.
I'm so very honored. David was a fantastic man who gave of his time and talents simply to help others. I found out about David while reading the book, The American Way of Poverty which shares stories of people affected by the United States Housing Crisis. David was the Director of the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau.
"Under David's leadership, HLAB along with City Life/Vida Urbana, adapted their anti-gentrification model into a fierce anti-foreclosure movement. The anti-foreclosure movement -- which now encompasses HLAB, CityLife/Vida Urbana, LSC and many other organizations -- works with homeowners and tenants to thwart the efforts of lenders to displace families after foreclosure. David and HLAB students played a key role in this mobilizing effort, canvassing foreclosed properties on a weekly basis, conducting weekly clinics in which they educate occupants about their rights, and deploying a legal "shield" for all of the movement's members by vigorously defending post-foreclosure evictions through a variety of creative and successful approaches.
Indeed, the movement that David helped to initiate has become so effective in Boston that it has inspired other activists in cities throughout the country to do the same. And, these successes have been well documented by PBS, the NY Times, The Nation, local media and even the subject of a documentary produced by by French Television. Moreover, David helped to secure generous funding from the Oak Foundation to help finance these efforts for years to come." -The Boston Globe

Here are the lyrics:
Where We Are - Anne E. DeChant, Frye Gaillard ©2016
My name is Alice my husband's Jay
We lost our house in the crash of '08
When I got sick bills piled up
Now the money we get don't last as long as the month
So after all the years of saving
And breathing in that dust
The mine shut down now they say
There's nothing left for us
Does the red white and blue wave for everybody
Do the fruits of our labor trickle down
Can we all hitch our wagon to those stars
The answer is plain when you look at Where We Are
My name is Oliver I'm still in school
My dad works two jobs my mom skips some meals
Me and my brothers sleep on the floor
I was planning for college I'm not planning any more
Sometimes I cry 'cause I can't help enough
And it feels like my country forgot about us
Does the red white and blue wave for everybody
Do the fruits of our labor trickle down
Can we all hitch our wagon to those stars
The answer is plain when you look at Where We Are
But deep in my heart I believe
In the America that I dream
I'm not talking 'bout having everything like reality TV
I just want all of us to get what we need
When the red white and blue waves for everybody
And the fruits of our labor trickle down
When we all can hitch our wagon to those stars
The truth will be plain when you look at Where We Are
I'm excited to meet Stacy Grossman and Senator Elizabeth Warren,
champion of hard working Americans and big bank ball buster (yes, I'm inappropriate), and sing "Where We Are" for everyone there. I'll be giving a copy of my CD as well as a "Go Get Joe" t-shirt to Senator Warren as she is a huge dog lover!
On September 13th I'll return to Nashville for The Americana Music Festival and two shows. On Sat., Sept. 17th I will be at The Skillery in Germantown in Nashville. The show will be "Watermelon Wine and the Poetry of Americana Music" a multi media presentation that I do with my friend and award winning author, Frye Gaillard. Our special guests will be Peter Cooper, singer/songwriter, producer, author and writer editor for The Country Music Hall of Fame and singer/songwriter, Fayssoux McLean. We're doing this show in cooperation with The Porch Writers Collective.
